Can sex appeal close the deal?

Recently during a meeting with a business associate, the topic came up as to who has the advantage when it comes to launching a career in the music business, men or women.  Considering the fact that music is a male dominated industry as far as entry level management goes, woman can often be at a disadvantage.   However, males often feel that a pretty face can take precedence over raw talent.  The stories are many when it comes to small town girls heading to tinsel town to seek fame and fortune only to end up broke and disappointed. On the other hand, males can feel that the competition is so thick that they can literally be over looked and loose opportunities to lesser talent.

Quite often both of the above situations are the result of one common denominator, lack of knowledge and understanding of the music business. The old saying that "knowledge is power" still holds true. When artist familiarize themselves with basic information about the business, they will undoubtedly make better choices about their careers.  When females have greater knowledge of their options in the business, they may feel less incline to be overly dependent on their sex appeal, and possibly avoid being put in a position to be taken advantage of.  On the other hand, males can gain a competitive edge by understanding the business and knowing how to position themselves for the best opportunities.  Overall, a greater understanding of the business can only help males and females avoid some of the pitfalls that face new artist and especially in the case of females, avoid being the target of misguided sexual advances.

Remember, in many cases, “sex appeal can close the deal”, however in all situations, “Knowledge is POWER”.  Increase your knowledge of the business and take your career to the next level.
